About the production

A chiropodist, his wife, a pig, a bad smell, Spam and a royal wedding…what more could anyone want from a musical?

Based on the Allan Bennett film ‘A Private Function’ this hilarious musical comedy takes us back to 1940s Britain. We have won the war, but food is still scarce and anyone found trading in suspect meat could fall foul of the tenacious Mr Wormold – government Meat Inspector.

The only bright spark on the horizon is the impending marriage of Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip and the towns’ elite plan to celebrate in style. Gilbert Chilvers, the local chiropodist and his ambitious wife Joyce find themselves embroiled in a plot to illegally rear a pig especially for the occasion. The pig in question, Betty, kicks up a stink and runs amuck creating a madcap adventure for Joyce and Gilbert who, despite the unlikely circumstances, reignite the true love they once had.

A brilliantly British story of the underdog overcoming all the odds, it showcases expertly crafted songs that have a perfect balance of wit, pathos and post war optimism by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe, the Olivier-winning duo behind Honk, Peter Pan, Mary Poppins, Half a Sixpence and most recently Wind in the Willows.
