An operations/departmental manager is someone who manages teams and/or projects, and achieves operational or departmental goals as part of the delivery of an organisation’s strategy. They are accountable to a more senior manager or business owner.
Key responsibilities may include creating and delivering operational plans, managing projects, leading and managing teams, managing change, financial resource management, and coaching and mentoring. Roles may include, but are not limited to: Operations Manager, Regional Manager, Divisional Manager and Departmental Manager.
Entry requirements for this standard will be decided by each employer, behavioural and self-management requirements typically include candidates who demonstrate interpersonal excellence, personal and organisational effectiveness, accountability and agility, with a strong focus on professionalism i.e. someone who sets a consistent and impartial example, operating within the organisation’s values.
Qualifications and Progression
Typically this apprenticeship will take 24 months to complete.
On completion of the programme, the assessment of the knowledge, skills and behaviours, and the final synoptic end-point assessment, learners may choose to register as Full Members with the Chartered Management Institute, and those with 3 years of management experience or more can apply for Chartered Manager Status through CMI. Learners without Level 2 English or maths will
need to achieve this prior to taking the end-point assessment. Learners may achieve their CMI Level 5 in Management and Leadership if appropriate through taking the below units:

502 – Principles of developing, managing and leading individuals and teams to achieve success
509 – Managing stakeholder relationships
513 – Managing projects to achieve results
514 – Managing change
515 – Creating and delivering operational plans
520 – Managing finance
525 – Using reflective practice to inform personal and professional development
