What is the course about?

As a workplace and employer, schools have to risk assess their first aid requirements to ensure
appropriate provision is in place to look after employees in a first aid incident. This 3-day L3 Award in
First Aid at Work qualification is one of the statutory qualifications for this purpose.
Successful completion of this course will ensure your first aid team have the skills and knowledge to
manage emergency incidents and treat illnesses and injuries in the workplace.

There are no prerequisites for this course.

Course Content

Unit 1: Emergency First Aid at Work

By the end of this 1 day course, delegates will know:

• Roles and Responsibilities of the first aider
• Minimising risk in an emergency situation
• Accident Procedure
• Safe Airway Positions
• Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
• Safe use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs)
• First Aid for seizures and febrile convulsions
• First Aid for choking
• Treatment for bleeding and shock
• Appropriate First Aid Kit Use
• Completing accident forms

Unit 2: Recognition and Management of Illness and Injuries in the Workplace

• Conduct a secondary survey
• Managing catastrophic bleeds and use of emergency bandages, haemostatic dressings and
  tourniquets (depending on workplace risk assessment)
• First aid for fractures, dislocations, sprains and strains
• Head injuries including concussion and compression
• Managing a casualty with a potential spinal injuries
• Chest injuries
• Anaphylaxis – dealing with a severe allergic reaction and correct use of adrenaline auto – injector
  pens
• First aid for major illnesses, such as, heart attack, stroke, asthma and diabetes
• First aid for burns and scalds including electrical and chemical burns
• Eye injuries
• First aid for poisoning

The training and assessment typically consists of 3-days (18 hour) course leading to the full Level 3
First Aid at Work qualification.
This course is assessed continuously by tutor observation of ‘real-life’ skills benchmarked to National
Occupational Standards.
This certificate has a valid ‘license to practice’ lifetime of three years. Certificate renewal is by
completion of another First Aid at Work qualification. The HSE strongly recommend candidates take
an annual 3 hour refresher during the lifetime of the qualification.
