What is the course about?
Motivational interviewing (MI) is a directive, client-centred style for eliciting behaviour change by
helping clients to explore and resolve ambivalence. It is most centrally defined not by technique but
by its spirit as a facilitative style for interpersonal relationship, improving these skills can make it
easier to get better results. The training will focus on how you can improve your interpersonal skills,
build self-confidence, become more effective with your interaction skills.
Prochaska, Norcross and DiClemente describe the Stages of Change that people progress through
as they change their behaviour. Being aware of these stages enables professionals to support
clients.
The course is aimed at any professional working with adults, young people, children or families,
where behavioural or attitudinal change is needed or desired.
Prerequisites
There are no prerequisites for this course.
Objectives
At the end of the course delegates will have:
- Been introduced to the theory, spirit and principles in using MI to help people make
positive change - Understood the change cycle.
- Reflected on different methods of communication and how to decide when each is
most suitable. - Practical skills in communicating with people more effectively to motivate them to
make positive changes
Course content
- Reflect on the common ways of trying to motivate clients and explore why these
ways often do not work - Learn about how to understand people’s existing motivation through careful listening
of the language they use - Learn how to build and strengthen client’s motivation to engage in
rehabilitation/make positive changes in their behaviour - Learn about engaging and working collaboratively with even highly resistant people
