What is the course about?
Solution Focused Brief Intervention Therapy was developed in America in the 1980s by Steve
de Shazer and Insoo Kim Berg. After spending many years studying problem behaviour and trying
to change it, they switched to studying ‘solution behaviour’ and how to promote solutions. The course
is aimed at any professional working with adults, young people, children or families, where
behavioural or attitudinal change is needed or desired.

There are no prerequisites for this course.
Objectives
At the end of the course delegates will have:
- Introduction for participants to the theory, spirit and principles in using Solution
Focused Therapy to help people make positive change - Reflected on different methods of communication and how to decide when each is
most suitable. - Practical skills in communicating with people more effectively to motivate them to
make positive changes
Course content
- Reflect on the common ways of trying to motivate clients and explore why these
ways often do not work - Learn about how to elicit solutions through careful listening of the language they use
- Learn how to build and strengthen client’s focus on solutions to engage in making
positive changes in their behaviour - Learn about engaging and working collaboratively with even highly resistant people
